Israeli Airstrikes on the Houthis
In another escalation of tensions in the Middle East, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) conducted a series of airstrikes on Houthi-controlled territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast on 26 December 2024. The Israelis argue this was in response to Houthi missile attacks on Israeli targets, with the IAF targeting Houthi military infrastructure and other strategic assets valuable to the group.
Israel has accused Iran of supporting and funding the Houthi group, providing them with advanced weaponry that many military forces around the world do not possess. This includes hypersonic missiles, which have proven difficult for both the US and Israeli defence systems to intercept. Iran’s increased involvement in the region has left officials in Tel Aviv extremely concerned.
The military targets struck by Israel included military sites and strategic infrastructure believed to be used by the Houthis to launch further missile strikes.
Israeli Airstrikes in Syria
Syria continues to be a key focus for Israeli military operations, with Israel concentrating its strikes on Iranian military assets in the country. Over the past two weeks, Israel has conducted several airstrikes on Syrian military positions, particularly in the Damascus area and key strategic locations in the Latakia region, leaving dozens dead, including civilians.
These operations are a continuation of Israel's efforts to prevent Iran from expanding its power and influence in the region, which Israel views as a direct threat to its security.
The strikes have targeted weapons depots, air defence systems, and missile launch sites. The Israelis have also launched strikes on densely populated civilian areas, even before the Assad dynasty fell, notably in Damascus.
Israel's strategy in Syria highlights its regional concerns, as the country has long sought to reduce the growing presence of its regional foes, particularly in neighbouring states such as Syria and Lebanon.
The Ongoing Palestinian Crisis
While Israel is striking multiple targets on several fronts, its military campaign against Gaza does not seem to be slowing down.
Over the course of December 2024 and into January 2025, Israeli military operations have intensified, resulting in thousands of Palestinian civilian casualties and widespread destruction in Gaza.
While Israel claims that these operations are targeting Hamas militants, many organisations and individuals from across the globe argue that the scale of civilian harm, particularly the destruction of homes, hospitals, and schools, points to a disproportionate use of force.
Global condemnation has been growing, with international bodies and various governments demanding accountability and calling on Israel to halt its military operations. Discussions surrounding human rights violations in Gaza have become a focal point for both regional and international debates.
Despite these calls for a ceasefire, Israel's attacks in Gaza have continued without disruption.
