Conservative and Scottish national party MPs walked out of the house of commons on Wednesday.
· This was in response to the Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, ‘hijacking’ the SNP’s proposition for an opposition day.
o Instead selecting the labour party’s amendment for a vote.
o Sir Lindsay acknowledged that this was an exceptional move.
· The SNP argued that selection meant throwing away their opportunity to vote.
· This led to both Conservative party MPs and SNP MPs walking out of the house in protest.
· Labour accused the SNP of ‘playing political games”.
· In the end there was a vote, Labour's amendment, pushing for ceasefire, was approved by the commons without a formal vote.
· The speaker returned and apologized after this amendment was approved.
· He claimed to be concerned about security.
· Adding that he wanted to ensure full inclusion of all the different views of the parties.
o “It was my wish to do the best by every member in the house.”
· 30+ MPs signed an early-day motion of no confidence in the Speaker.
