  • The Labour Party is now in power in the UK headed by Sir Kier Starmer as the new prime minister
  • Labour won the election in a landslide victory
    • Labour won with 412 seats whilst Conservatives came second at 121.
  • During ex-PM Rishi Sunak’s speech, he apologised to the conservative party and took the blame for the results

    • Launch a new Border Security Command
    • Set up Great British Energy
    • Crack down on antisocial behaviour
    • Recruit 6,500 new teachers
  • “There’s no quick fix to get out of the mess that the tories have made” – Starmer
  • Labour has also promised to build more houses to ease the housing crisis
    • They promised to build 1.5mn houses over 5 year in government
    • This caused housebuilding stocks to surge following their victory
  • Starmer also stated that one of his first acts of power would be to abolish the Rwanda scheme, “its never been a deterrent... I’m not prepared to continue with gimmicks”
  • Labour has pledged not to increase national insurance or income tax rates leading people to believe that they will have to find alternatives to fund their plans for change
